Shirt Fitting Guide

You will need a body measuring tape, and possibly a friend.

Step ONE: Write down all your measurements for the following:
  • Shoulders (you can measure a shirt that fits you well, seam to seam.)
  • Chest / Bust (this is the widest point of your chest.)
  • Waist around your bellybutton. If your waist goes in, the narrowest point. If your waist goes out, the widest point.
  • Hips – the widest part around your butt and thighs.
  • Back – nape of your neck to where you want a shirt to cover.
  • Sleeve length – shoulder seam of a shirt that fits you well to the cuff or your shoulder to your wrist.
  • Sleeve width – measure the widest point of your bicep.
Step TWO: Compare your numbers to the shirt you are considering.

When you are looking at a shirt, for chest, waist, hips, and sleeve width, double the number of the ruler or yardstick measurement to get the final measurement. For example, a shirt that measures 24″ from armpit to armpit has a chest size of 48″, or 2 x 24″. An arm width that shows 8″ has a circumference of 16″, which is 2 x 8″.

For shoulders, sleeve length, pit to hip, and back, the shirt measurement is not multiplied. So if you see a back measurement of 30″ and a sleeve length measurement of 23″, those are the final measurements you will use.

Now, compare your numbers to a shirt you are considering. Your numbers must be SMALLER than all of the shirt’s final measurements for it to fit you. The chest is usually the most important size to consider, but depending on your body shape a chest that fits may not fit the rest of you.

Remember, these measurements are NOT SIZE NUMBERS like for a suit or for men’s jeans. A body with a chest size of 40″ will need a shirt that is larger than 40″ so the person can move around. The extra space for movement is called ease, and you will want AT LEAST 2″ of ease in the chest – or even 4″ – so 42″ to 44″ would be more appropriate for a body that measures 40″ at the chest.

If you have breasts and your chest is the same or up to 2 inches larger than the measurement of the shirt but ALL YOUR OTHER MEASUREMENTS fit inside that shirt, you may be able to leave a button undone over a tank top, camisole, or even a nice bra.

If you have a masc chest your chest can fit the exact number of the shirt if you intend to wear it open like Dean, but you do need to be able to button it up over your chest and stomach while standing still or it will look too small, even open.

Feel free to contact me for more help if you aren’t sure – as long as your body measurements are accurate we should be able to figure out if any given shirt is going to fit.

Good luck, and happy hunting! 🙂

Bracelets

Measuring Your Bracelet Size

Your bracelet size is the measurement around your wrist, plus however much room you like for ease. The best way to measure your wrist size is to cut a strip of paper the width of the bracelet you are looking to buy, wrap it tightly around your wrist, and then loosen it until you like where it sits. Too loose and the bracelet will spin, too tight and it will be uncomfortable, even claustrophobic. Tape the paper strip on, wear that paper bracelet a few minutes to be sure you like it, and when you’re happy with your adjustments, cut it and measure it flat.

That measurement is your size, *including ease*. I do not *add* ease to this measurement, I get as close as I can, so you need to already have added in any extra you want to that number. If you’re between eighths, round up.

Custom Fabric Bracelets

Your size is the circumference of your wrist, plus the amount of ease you want. So if your wrist is 6.5″ but you like 1/2″ extra. you would order size 7″.

If you choose a magnet clasp the style may come with an attached keeper chain, in that case the default is approximately 1.5″ larger than the bracelet. Measure your hand as shown in the sizing photo and if your hand circumference is more than 1.5″ larger than the size you want to order, let me know.

For example, if your wrist is 7.5, an attached keeper chain would let the bracelet open to 9 inches to pass over your hand.

Chain Bracelets

Bracelets made with chain you are likely to want a little more room than a fabric bracelet. I like mine to dangle down my wrist just a little. Your best bet is to measure a bracelet you already have and like, and use that measurement.

Otherwise, err on the side of a little more ease in a chain bracelet. You can always cut out a few links or have someone handy do that for you, much more easily than you can add links.
